Maturity begins with the capacity to sense and, in good time and without defensiveness, admit to our own craziness. If we are not regularly deeply embarrassed by who we are, the journey to self-knowledge hasn’t begun.
-Alain de Botton
We think that we’re all very connected, we think that we’re all very communicative. But when you actually strip it down, there’s a lot wrong. And the proof is in the pudding — you have a whole society of people who are depressed and insecure and anxious and paranoid and worried … and, fundamentally, feeling very unseen… Maybe we’ve constructed culture in a way that people are not feeling recognized, loved, accepted, happy with their place in society… What have we done to create such unhappiness?
Love your Enemies, for they tell you your Faults.
― Benjamin Franklin
In writing your poem, tell the truth as you know it. Tell your truth. Don’t try to sugar it up. Don’t force your poem to be nice or proper or normal or happy if it does not want to be. Remember that poetry is life distilled and that life is not always nice or proper or normal or happy or smooth or even-edged.
I`d like to thank my friend, Alameen, for giving up a bit of his time to sit for these portraits. You`re a wonderful human being.
2017 has been quite a year. I`m extremely grateful that it has been a year of growth, mostly. I feel motivated to move into 2018 with a sense of confidence and determination to achieve personal goals.
I should take this opportunity to wish you well over the festive season. Spend lots of time with friends and loved ones. I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year.
