Why Seongbuk is Perfect for a Proposal in Seoul
Proposals in public can be very intimidating and stressful so location is key. There are a trove of locations in Seongbuk suited for couples who seek privacy and space for proposals. These could be lesser known parks, cafes hidden in alleys or even more quiet palaces. Seoul is very dense and highly populated so your photographer needs to know the city well.
How the Session Came Together
S reached out to me after searching for Seoul photographers in Seoul. He was looking for something with more storytelling, slightly cinematic with an element of documentary style photography. He had never proposed before so he was quite nervous and obviously unfamiliar with the whole process. I guided him every step of the way because his ability to relax and savor all the small moments was important in order to convey the quietness and intimacy that he hoped for in the photographs. I planned all the details of the day, from the mental prep to going down on one knee; how he could make it personal instead of cliche; exact location of the proposal; the flowers; the direction in which he needed to face; the locations for the photographs based on the direction of the sun and which poses would work in which location.
The Proposal Moment
S chose to approach the moment at his own pace and I encouraged him to say a few words, as opposed to just jumping in and going down on one knee. This was a great opportunity for both of them to connect and feel grounded in the moment while reflecting on how they arrived to this point. It also helped to set the tone for the rest of the shoot.
Seoul Proposal Photography: What to Expect
There is a tremendous amount of planning so start the process early. This could involve either an in-person meeting or video calls in order to avoid miscommunication. Have an idea of what you’re looking for and what you’d like the photographs to say.
Anything can happen so factor in any delays, such as traffic, people in the spot of where you planned to propose so just keep your cool and take your time. Your photographer is patiently waiting and ready to capture everything from a distance. Sessions after the proposal could be anywhere from one to three hours so arrive to the session just focused on each other and try to ignore everyone else around you. You will absolutely not be expected to know how to pose - that’s the job of your photographer.
Planning Your Seoul Proposal Session
Fall/Autumn (mid October~ mid November) is the prettiest time of the year in Seoul, in my opinion. Fall leaves, a temperature that doesn’t cause a couple to be sweaty, light that just gives and gives. Spring (mid April~end of May) also has its charms. Flowers and cherry blossoms (first half of April) are incredibly picturesque, too.
